The Sultan did this because he understood the increasing Ottoman naval power which endangered many states that could come under Ottoman control.
Pompey’s Pillar dates back to the Roman period and is part of the old ruins of a large Roman complex that was in the city ages ago. This column a red granite column of about 27 meters in length is a tourist site in Alexandria that stands on the hill of Bab Sidra, and the ancient Kom El-Shoqafa plateau.
