The Giza Pyramids date back to the 4th dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, and it has one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The complex consists of three huge pyramids that were built for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, as well as six smaller pyramids for their queens and family members. You will also see the Great Sphinx, the Valley Temple where the mummification and burial rituals of the kings took place, and the Village of Workers. You will learn more about the amazing stories of the Giza Pyramids complex as you visit this great Complex.
The Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed by King “Khufu” who was the second ruler of the 4th dynasty of Egypt and inherited the creativity of his father King “Sneferu” who built a masterpiece of engineering. The Pyramid of Khufu is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids at Giza, it was built over a period of about 20 years in the early 26th century BC by using 2.3 million blocks of stone that weigh 6 million tonnes. The pyramid was covered with a white limestone that made it shine in the sunlight. You can see inside the Pyramid of Khufu three chambers including the Chamber of the King where his sarcophagus is located.
The most famous statue of ancient Egypt is the Great Sphinx of Giza which is a massive sculpture that has the body of a lion and the head of a king. The statue was carved from a single rock from the Giza plateau, it is thought that the statue was made during the Old Kingdom of Egypt and it belongs to King Khafre who built the second largest pyramid. The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the largest and oldest statues in the world as it is about 66 feet high and 240 feet long, it was painted with bright colors but they have faded over time.
The Valley Temple is built of huge megalithic blocks that were sheathed in red granite and are very similar to the Mortuary Temple. The square pillars of the T-shaped hallway were made of solid granite which is well-preserved and the floor was paved in alabaster. The Valley Temple was part of a larger funerary complex that included the mortuary temple (on the east side of the pyramid), the pyramid (the burial chamber inside), and a covered causeway that joined the two temples. The Valley Temple is one of the oldest and best-preserved examples of ancient Egyptian temple architecture.
After enjoying your tasty lunch with a view of the Pyramid or the Nile, you will follow your tour guide to continue exploring:
Saqqara Pyramid is where the Egyptians developed the pyramid shape for their burial monuments as they started with the simple mastaba which is a rectangular structure made of mud bricks. The Egyptians experimented with different forms of pyramids before they built the famous pyramids of Giza such as the stepped and the bent Pyramids. The Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest of these pyramids which belongs to the funeral complex of the third dynasty king Djoser. Imhotep designed a unique structure in the early dynastic period that consisted of six mastabas that were stacked on top of each other, and reached by stairway to the sky.
The Ancient City of Memphis was the first capital of Egypt for most of the time when the pharaohs ruled in ancient times. Memphis was an important religious center in ancient times, it was founded by King Menes who unified Upper and Lower Egypt around 2925 BC. The main god was “Ptah” the god of craftsmen. Memphis was also known as the White Wall because of its whitewashed palace.
